Toto Wolff has made a shocking statement. For the first time, the Mercedes team principal has spoken openly about who he wants to hire to replace Lewis Hamilton, who will leave at the end of the year.
Wolff threw out four names, none of which are really surprising, but rather the openness with which he focuses on one of them:
"We have some very interesting options! There's Kimi Antonelli, Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, and of course Max Verstappen, who we want more than anyone else. It's a collaboration that has to happen at some point! It's just a question of when... But there's no denying it: he's our number one candidate alongside George Russell! But I don't want to rule out the others. Our main goal is to be a top team and to be able to provide a truly competitive car that can attract these drivers. It's more about creating an effective team that's the happy medium on the road to success, but of course, as a team principal, you always want the best pair of drivers on the field," said Wolff, who effectively unwittingly settled the "who is better, Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen" debate.
Wolff: "We must have a COMPETITOR for once."
