One of Mercedes' most respected engineers told the New York Times how the seven-time world champion achieved such success.
According to Andrew Shovlin, it wasn't work ethic, passion, or even the will to improve that played a key role, but rather a morbid fear of defeat!
“I don’t think there’s another driver like him. He has a completely unique approach, and I loved working with him. He’s extremely committed to success and demands the same from everyone else. But what really made him great, what’s his real superpower, is his almost pathological fear of defeat. He has a terrible horror of it, which is why he does everything to avoid it, constantly influencing those around him to avoid it. I don’t know any other competitor with such a mentality. Obviously, we all hate defeat, but the anxiety it causes and the desire to do everything to avoid it put Lewis Hamilton far above the rest,” Shovlin said admiringly of their former driver.
What do you think, will Lewis Hamilton's fear at Scuderia Ferrari grow or weaken?
