It has been known for some time that Zandvoort, and thus the Netherlands, will soon be leaving the F1 circuit. Two more Grands Prix will be held there, and then... Then, after some initial hesitation, Assen has now made it clear that it would be happy to take over!
However, the situation is not simple. The true traditions of Europe and Formula 1 mean less and less to the current management of the motor circus, (unfortunately) despite this, Arjan Bos, the chairman of the Assen circuit, has indicated that they would be happy to be rotation partners in the (otherwise horrible) system devised by F1.
"Of course, it's a big dream for us to bring Formula 1 to Assen. I think that when you've invested so much money in a circuit and you also have public support, then - if it's possible - we should definitely try. That's exactly what we're doing, and we're approaching this possibility very positively. We'll calmly examine what it takes to be able to apply in a substantial way, but for the time being, it can't be said that Zandvoort is leaving and Assen is coming in.
"We have to remain cautious. I don't know, we'll see if F1 really wants this race. I'd also like to hear Zandvoort's arguments about why they're dropping out, and I don't know Formula 1's ideas regarding the Netherlands either. We know they want fewer European races and are also considering Africa and India. These aspects must also be taken into account," Bos mused.
