Liam Lawson expressed his opinion in a podcast about what he thinks about New Zealand-based McLaren bringing glory to the British.
Born in this impressive island nation, Lawson isn't New Zealand's first F1 driver, as Denny Hulme was once a world champion for the country. Yet, it wasn't them, but the orange McLaren team that achieved the most success, as it was founded by a local, namely Bruce McLaren, who also raced for the first time in those colors. Yes, but the team isn't tied to the country, not like it is to England, where it has a thousand connections. Lawson complained about this...
"I don't see the point. McLaren is a New Zealand team through and through, even in its name. It's a bit like the situation with Red Bull Racing, where when they win, the Austrian anthem plays, even though their roots are all in England. McLaren's headquarters are there too, but they're still New Zealanders. It seems like a huge absurdity from a New Zealand perspective, especially since one of the greatest legends, Bruce McLaren, is the patriarch of this whole project," Lawson expressed his legitimate criticism.
