An interesting observation was recently shared by Carlos Sainz's former race engineer. Tom Stallard, who currently works with Oscar Piastri, believes that the Spaniard's work could make the McLaren team competitive; without him, they wouldn't have gotten here.
However, according to Stallard, Sainz also benefited a lot from these periods, which allowed him to join Scuderia Ferrari:
“He’s a brilliant driver who clearly helped make McLaren competitive. Although he wasn’t considered a real asset at Renault, he showed his potential here; we needed his services enormously. He contributed enormously to our project; we wouldn’t be here today if he hadn’t been with us at that time. And we helped restore his self-esteem, so today he’s considered one of the best drivers.”
Now he's having the same beneficial effect at Ferrari as he did at us, he's playing a huge role in the fact that the Reds are in the fight for the Constructors' World Championship." - an unexpected but huge compliment from a competitor.
