The former Scuderia Ferrari team principal believes the Italian team did the wrong thing by hiring Lewis Hamilton. However, he believes Hamilton got a great deal!
Binotto returned to Formula 1 this year as Audi CEO, but he will always remain a Ferrari supporter. He believes Fred Vasseur made a mistake in recruiting Hamilton, as the focus should instead be on the talent of Charles Leclerc:
"Hamilton did very well to join Ferrari, I agree with his decision. If I had to decide on this matter, I would not have called him to the team, because I think we should focus on the young drivers. There is the talented Leclerc, I think we should achieve the big goals with him.
"I've been a Ferrari fan since I was a child, and our shared past can't be erased. I still have many photos and objects from that time in my apartment. But professional decisions aren't always balanced with emotions; you have to know how to distinguish them. Despite this, I'm still happy today when Ferrari wins. I have many friends there, and at those times, I feel like I've contributed a little to their success," Binotto said.
