Bahrain Test Days: Could McLaren Be the Fastest?

Bahreïn, jours d'essai : McLaren serait-elle la plus rapide ?

Tóth Krisztián Márk |

Based on the first day's results, one might even believe this, but it would be a shame to draw more serious conclusions from Wednesday's results.

During the training session, which began in far from ideal conditions, the first to take to the track was Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, and he also finished the morning in first place. In Bahrain, unusually cool weather prevailed, with strong winds, an air temperature of 15 degrees, and a track temperature of 25 degrees, and these values did not improve during the day. On the low-grip track, several drivers slipped, including Liam Lawson who lost control in a particularly spectacular manner, flipping over behind the wheel of the Red Bull. Nevertheless, the RB rookie managed to take second place, ahead of Alexander Albon until the lunch break.

In the afternoon, changes and new complications arrived. On the second leg, Max Verstappen and George Russell also got into their cars, immediately starting to attack Antonelli's time, even beating him. However, this didn't last long, as another driver, Charles Leclerc, took the lead. But before the other drivers could start attacking him, an unusual interruption with a red flag occurred. A power outage hit the track, blocking work for almost an hour. Meanwhile, a bit of rain also arrived in Bahrain, and the track cooled down even more, but this didn't stop Lando Norris from finishing the day in the lead, running a lap ahead of Russell and Verstappen.
